Our "Water Jet" method, ecofriendly and able to cut any materials without causing any stresses, is now at the center of attention in leading-edge industry areas including space exploration and medical. We asked its business outline and advantages of running operations in Tokyo to Toshiomi Yoneyama, president of the company specialized in the special process and ranked among the “Best Spirted Small to Medium-sized Manufacturers 300” selected by the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Agency under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
After starting the company in 1975 as a private business focusing on designing and manufacturing molds for printed circuit boards (PCBs), we turned it to a company when we moved to Mizuho Town, Nishitama District in 1980. We were growing steadily for a while but eventually found it difficult to sustain our business as it was, thanks to an advice “molding businesses will go overseas in the near future” from an SME management consultant we saw just 2 years before the Plazza Accord. Our turning point was when our previous president found the US was using water jet methods for PCB processing while he was striving to survive by learning at a SME University and gathering information. We immediately procured the equipment but this was a start from scratch as the processing methods were not well known at that time in Japan. We used to market ourselves through displaying at exhibitions and publishing information vigorously. Before long, we became perceived as a leading company of water jet among researchers of manufacturers before we noticed as they started to come to us when conventional processing did not work well or they were examining another method of processing new materials. Today, we have frequent inquiries from potential customers via our website.
A major feature of Water Jet processing, a method using Mach 3 ultra-high-pressure water mixed with abrasive, is its “ability to process without impairing functional properties of target materials”. Other processing methods sometimes strain materials through chemical reactions and/or heat or alter physical properties. However, water jet processing does not cause these disadvantages because it uses water. Today, the process is applied to cutting new materials, compound materials and hard-to-cut materials including titan and special processes for high-performance materials have also been materialized, appreciated by a wide range of companies such as in auto, aviation, construction industries and research organizations.
Advantages of running businesses in Tokyo include the city brand itself as a matter of course but furthermore its abilities in offering information which enhances companies’ bedrocks and networks we can handily use. Various industries around us offer environments where we can collaborate with other businesses such as trading houses when we think of expanding overseas for example and vital information obtainable there is also very valuable. As a company running business in Tokyo we think we are responsible for becoming a good model for SMEs not only in Tokyo but nationwide and disseminating our works and successes all over Japan in an effort to vitalize nation’s SMEs.
