Fukanaka Plating Industries Co., Ltd. (Sumida City)
The company entered the limelight during the recession period in early 1990s because of its plating technologies for lithium battery components and thereafter grabbed global market share of 100% for copier parts. We interviewed second generation president Minoru Fukada, an ex-corporate employee and successor to founder president, about his company and thoughts about Sumida City.
We apply plating processes to components of home appliances, autos, medical devices and others. For copier components, we boast global market share of 100%. Also for certain components for flat-panel TV boards, our domestic share is 70% or more.
Viewed as an interesting company in Sumida, we had a visit from Minister for National Policy Yoshito Sengoku the other day.
We do not have most advanced facilities in such a small factory but always in mind is we want to be working on ingenious plating others cannot imitate.
As my father’s place of origin is Sumida City, the founder president built a factory and started his business at this familiar place. Sumida City is very beneficial for businesses as it is close to central spots of Tokyo such as Otemachi and Shinagawa. Logistic environment is also favorable with its convenient access to Haneda and Narita Airports.
More than anything, its attraction should be good networks in the City. Even though many factories are accumulated, relationships with regional residents are very close and, among companies also, sense of fellowship outweighs that of rivalry. Many meddling companions, in good meaning, are surviving, circulars are still passed around and people lift and parade miniature shrines at Japanese festivals.
Sumida City is in Tokyo but at the same time has an atmosphere of local areas. My strong impression is everyone is willing to vitalize the City.
We are leading activities of our downtown business school "Frontier Sumida Academy."
We have seen many small firms closing down their businesses due to a lack of capable successors. We founded the academy with a desire not to lose local industries anymore. It has been 6 years since its inception with potential successors of more than 80 companies attending and applicants are increasing rapidly as they see graduates’ vigorous activities.
What I am most conscious of is my company of course. At the same time, however, I am also keen to vitalizing industries in Sumida City. I would be happy to hear somebody saying “Sumida is such a nice place” or “we may be able to do as those tiny companies are making great efforts.” Let’s vitalize Sumida City all together as one can never lift a miniature shrine by oneself.
