In Edogawa Ward, cities and industries co-exist and co-prosper. A project, which aims to bring together the wisdom and technology nurtured in the long history to develop athletic equipment "made in Edogawa" for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has started in FY2017, full of dreams.

Desire to support the Olympic and Paralympic Games with the power of "monozukuri (manufacturing)"

Symposium held on November 1, 2017
Since the metal and mechanical industries are prosperous in Edogawa Ward, it has about 2,800 facilities related to monozukuri (manufacturing). We have developed various support projects for industrial revitalization so far. This time, spurred by the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games, we launched the "Made in Edogawa Monozukuri (Manufacturing) Promotion Project" as a new attempt. We recruited groups focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises in the ward, which desire to challenge the monozukuri (manufacturing) of athletic equipment and related tools, to support their efforts. Shinichiro Suzuki, Unit Chief of the Industrial Development Section, Life Development Department, Edogawa Ward talks about this project as follows: “A major feature of the project is that the development needs to be done by a group, not by a single company. Accordingly, we can expect to revitalize regional industries by deepening inter-company exchanges. Since its purpose is to create a mechanism of cooperation, we adopted a style of outsourcing operations rather than granting development subsidies.”

With the aim to revive domestic archery bows

It was a project by the group led by NISHIKAWA SEIKI SEISAKUJO CO., LTD. that was selected after the review of project proposal and presentation. It was selected because the judges appraised its enthusiasm to revive domestic archery bows that have not been manufactured for a long time, and pipes from various industries built by NISHIKAWA SEIKI SEISAKUJO CO., LTD. in the past business. NISHIKAWA SEIKI SEISAKUJO CO., LTD. is a company with high technology in metal processing. Companies in the ward with expertise including mold, plating, and painting has participated in the group and are currently in the process of making prototypes. The project has attracted attention from the media and received great response as it was featured on television programs.
Mr. Suzuki says, "Everyone in the companies agrees with this aim and lavishes their original technology and skills. Our goal is to have Olympic national players use the equipment and tools developed in this project and to support the medal tally of Japan from the standpoint of monozukuri (manufacturing).
Furthermore, we are expecting to boost the technical abilities and the brand power of participating companies through this project and to revitalize the regional economy by the production of popular products.”
Edogawa Ward will continue to focus on public relations activities through events for citizens and exhibitions at industrial fairs.

Monozukuri (manufacturing) that energizes the city

Motohiro Sakai, Chief of the Industrial Development Section, Life Development Department
Motohiro Sakai, Chief of the Industrial Development Section, Life Development Department, Edogawa Ward says, "Monozukuri (manufacturing) energizes the city. I would like to further enhance monozukuri (manufacturing) in Edogawa Ward." He continues, "The citizens live close to their workplaces in Edogawa Ward, and their living and work are closely connected. People who work in the factory, where the sound of monozukuri (manufacturing) is overflowing in the city, can watch over children to build a safe community. In other words, revitalizing monozukuri (manufacturing) will lead to energizing of the entire city. I hope this project will help this process.”
Archery condenses the attraction of Edogawa Ward. This project is expected to be a trigger for monozukuri (manufacturing) technology that Edogawa Ward boasts to spread out to the world.
