The Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute (TIRI) is an evaluation laboratory that provides technical assistances to small and medium-sized enterprises, or SMEs, in Tokyo. On October 3, 2011, it opened a new head office in Aomi, Koto-Ku as an overall support base for the Monozukuri (manufacturing) industry. This time, we took part in its facility tour.

High Voltage Evaluation Laboratory

High-voltage evaluation is one of distinctive technical assistances of TIRI. With the newly installed high-voltage evaluation equipment, AC high-voltage generator and lightning impulse voltage generator can increase accuracy of testing thanks to the computer control.

Product Strength Evaluation Laboratory

In the Laboratory various strength evaluations of mainly metal products are conducted. Universal testing equipment which measures tensile of 2kN ~ 3000kN, compression and bending strength, and torsion testing equipment are installed.

Hemi-Anechoic Chamber

Acoustic analyses of machinery and equipment are conducted in the Hemi-Anechoic Chamber. The Chamber is finished with a material that has a sound absorbing performance. The sound insulation performance allows acoustic analyses of low-noise machinery.


Electromagnetic Shield Chamber

Due to more active communications using radio waves, including mobile phones, we have used higher radio wave frequencies for improving communication performance and accuracy. The Electromagnetic Shield Chamber helps developing products with an antenna chamber where you can evaluate communication equipment and antennas for utilizing radio waves effectively; and with a 3m anechoic chamber where you can measure radiation noises caused by devices using high frequencies.


Modeling Room

In the Modeling Room comprehensive supports for product measurement, designing, analysis, and prototyping are provided with utilizing 3D digital engineering. A high-speed molding machine (a RP device) is installed, and you can prototype trial products based on three-dimensional data.

Creative Experiment Gallery

The Creative Experiment Gallery was established to support developing Marketable Design Brands. In the Gallery, a wide range of supports from planning/marketing to sales promotion are provided.
Large number of people attended the tour, which was conducted with several small groups with different routes. What we were allowed to see in the tour was only a small part of the new head office, and we were surprised at its scale. Every participant listened to tour guides passionately and raised questions very actively. Participants had very high level of interests.
